Dutch Central Bank Transfers Gold from US to London Amid Global Instability
The Dutch Central Bank has transferred 86 tonnes of gold from the US and Canada to London, citing increased global instability and a desire for more immediate crisis liquidity. This move reflects a broader trend among European nations reevaluating North American storage options.
According to De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), the shift in distribution aims to reduce transatlantic political risk and ensure rapid asset deployment. The gold held at the Bank of England is considered the world's most easily tradable, making it more readily available for use in a crisis situation.
The total Dutch gold stock amounts to 612.4 tonnes, valued at €72.2bn ($83.7bn) at the end of 2025. The transfer was carried out through a combination of buying and selling and physical transport, spreading the risks associated with moving large quantities of gold.
