Dutch Gold Rush: 86 Tonne Relocation to Bank of England Vaults
The Dutch central bank has relocated 86 tonnes of gold to London as part of its efforts to strengthen its crisis preparedness. The move is a response to increasing geopolitical unrest, according to Governor Olaf Sleijpen.
The gold was previously held in vaults across New York and Ottawa, but the Bank of England's vault has been deemed the most easily tradable during market stress. This shift has resulted in London now holding 32% of the Dutch reserve, up from 18.1%, while New York and Ottawa each now hold 18.5%. The Netherlands retains the remaining 30.8%
The relocation was a multi-step process involving both trading and physical shipment. A total of 27 tonnes of gold bars were transported from the US and Canada to the bank's vault in Zeist, while another 59 tonnes were sold in New York and repurchased in London.
