Dutta Sees July Rate Hike Opportunity Amid Inflation Risks
Analyst Neel Dutta of Renaissance Macro Research is urging the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates this month, citing concerns over inflation and economic imbalances. Dutta argues that if the Fed waits until later, it may lose control over committee consensus.
The setup for a rate hike is favorable, with one clean inflation print remaining before rising oil prices and tariff risks push data higher. WTI crude has already risen 5.0% over the past month to $84.38 per barrel as of July 20, 2026, while core PCE has climbed every month over the last year.
Committee cohesion is fragile, with Fed officials Beth Hammack and Lori Logan pushing for a hike, but Philip Jefferson and Lisa Cook appearing less committed. This could give Chairman Kevin Warsh an opportunity to act on his own terms in July, before losing control by September or October when Trump's priorities shift.
Dutta's read is that the economy is bifurcated, with AI-related capex driving growth while residential investment and non-AI structures lag behind. Consumer spending is also weak, with the personal savings rate slipping from 6.2% in 2024Q1 to 3.9% in 2026Q1.
