DXY Ticks Near 100 as Markets Await US Inflation Data
The US Dollar Index (DXY) is trading near 99.90 as it extends its gains for the third consecutive day, ahead of the upcoming inflation report.
Analysts at Commerzbank note that the key issue in the US markets is whether inflation is falling quickly enough to prevent the Federal Reserve from raising interest rates, which would impact the dollar's medium-term policy and yield backdrop.
The DXY has been gaining ground due to increased safe-haven demand amid rising uncertainty surrounding Middle-East peace talks. Pakistan's defence minister indicated that Washington and Tehran were approaching an agreement regarding the Strait of Hormuz, but US President Donald Trump insisted that Tehran must pay reparations to the victims of attacks associated with the Islamic Republic.
The market expectations remain divided over the central bank's rate trajectory, with odds for a 25-basis-point Fed rate hike in September dropping to nearly 48% according to the CME FedWatch Tool, down from 52% the previous day.
