ECB Advances Digital Euro Project Towards 2029 Issuance
The European Central Bank (ECB) is advancing its Digital Euro project, aiming to create an electronic version of cash that complements traditional physical banknotes and coins. The digital euro will be a secure, efficient means of payment backed directly by the ECB, ensuring it has the same value as physical euros.
One key difference between the digital euro and private cryptocurrencies or stablecoins is its lack of volatility, its value will remain constant, unlike those assets that can fluctuate in value. The digital euro also has the backing of a public authority, providing liquidity, security, and solvency.
The ECB has defined technical rules for the project, known as the Rulebook, which outlines how it will operate. It is now awaiting European legislative ratification to begin real-world tests, with a possible issuance scheduled for 2029.
The digital euro's offline mode allows in-person payments directly between devices without an internet connection, making it more secure and private. The project prioritizes user privacy, respect for banking intermediation, and offline operability, setting it apart from other state projects already deployed or in advanced stages.
