ECB Aims to Monitor Energy Price Surge with Data-Driven Approach
The European Central Bank (ECB) is well-positioned to respond to surging energy prices, according to Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel. Speaking on Friday, July 24, Nagel stated that the ECB's recent rate hike in June has put it in a good position to monitor further developments closely.
Nagel noted that the situation in the Middle East remains highly fragile and that the energy price surge is creating intense uncertainty. He emphasized that the ECB should not pre-commit to any rate move and should instead analyze the large volume of data coming before its next meeting on September 10.
The ECB left interest rates unchanged on Thursday but signaled a potential rate hike in September due to rising energy prices, which are currently back around $100 a barrel. Natural gas prices are also surging, contributing to the uncertainty and inflation concerns.
