The European Central Bank (ECB) has invited Europeans to participate in choosing the new design for the euro banknotes. The public vote is one of the stages in the process that will lead to the final selection of the euro's new design.

More than 1,200 proposals were examined by the ECB, but two major themes emerged: European culture and the richness of nature.

The 'European culture' theme features six major historical figures who have left their mark on the history of art, music, science, and literature. The €5 banknote would feature Maria Callas, while the €10 banknote would be dedicated to Ludwig van Beethoven. Marie Curie, a Nobel Prize winner and pioneer of scientific research, would be featured on the €20 banknote.

The alternative theme focuses on nature, depicting European birds set against a river landscape. The series includes the wallcreeper paired with the European Parliament, the kingfisher with the European Commission, and so on.
