ECB Digital Euro App Exceeds EU Accessibility Standards

The European Central Bank (ECB) has announced that its proposed digital euro app will exceed EU accessibility standards. The ECB's design includes features such as enhanced visual design, full keyboard navigation, and screen-reader support to ensure that the app is usable by everyone.

According to the ECB, these accessibility features are included in the app to make it compliant with the European Accessibility Act. This legislation sets a high bar for digital products, requiring them to be accessible to people with disabilities.

The digital euro app is part of the ECB's plan for a central bank digital currency (CBDC), which will allow users to make payments digitally and provide an alternative to cash. The ECB has selected 36 payment service providers to participate in a pilot program, which is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2027.

The introduction of the digital euro has raised concerns among some privacy advocates, who argue that it could enable greater government surveillance of payments. However, the ECB has stated that the app will include privacy safeguards to address these concerns.
