ECB Economist Expects Euro Zone Inflation to Remain Above Target
The European Central Bank's (ECB) chief economist, Philip Lane, expects inflation in the euro zone to remain around 3% for the rest of this year. In an interview with RTE1, he emphasized that this level is well above the ECB's target of 2%. The current inflation rate in the euro zone stands at 2.9%, slightly higher than the previous month.
Lane pointed out that food inflation will be one of the main drivers of inflation over the next year, particularly due to climatic phenomena such as El Niño, which is expected to exert greater upward pressure on prices. He also highlighted the need to assess the impact of artificial intelligence on the global economy.
The ECB's decisions on interest rates will continue to be guided by the objective of ensuring the return of inflation to 2% in the medium term, according to Lane. However, he warned that the current scenario is uncertain due to the ongoing crisis in the Middle East and its potential impact on the global economy.
