ECB Faces Challenging Road Back to Normal Policy Conditions
Japan's financial repression experience has led to a difficult exit from decades of low interest rates, according to Hanno Lustig. Rather than focusing on intervention in the Yen, the European Central Bank should learn from Japan's mistakes and understand that returning to normal policy conditions is nearly impossible after prolonged periods of low interest rates.
Lustig notes that once central banks have maintained low interest rates for decades, it becomes extremely challenging to return to normal policy conditions. This is a key lesson from Japan's experience that the European Central Bank should prioritize.
