ECB Faces Complex Decision as Eurozone Inflation Accelerates Amid Energy Price Hikes

Eurozone inflation accelerated more than expected in August, but underlying pressures softened. The headline Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose from 2.9% to 3.3% year-over-year, surpassing the 3.2% consensus forecast. However, core CPI excluding energy, food, alcohol, and tobacco eased from 2.5% to 2.4%, undershooting expectations for an unchanged reading.

The main driver of the headline acceleration was energy inflation, which jumped from 10.3% to 14.3%. In contrast, services inflation slowed from 3.3% to 3.0%, and food, alcohol, and tobacco inflation remained steady at 1.2%.

The mixed signals leave the European Central Bank (ECB) with a complex decision ahead of its September meeting. While softer core and services inflation argue for patience, renewed energy shock keeps headline inflation well above target. As such, the ECB must balance two opposing signals: underlying inflation is moving in a more favorable direction, while energy-driven rise is pushing headline inflation sharply higher.
