ECB Faces Dilemma as Energy Shock Weighs on Growth and Inflation
The European Central Bank (ECB) held interest rates steady in its latest meeting, but the situation remains precarious. Lagarde acknowledged that growth is weakening and inflation pressure is building, creating a difficult dilemma for the ECB to respond to.
The culprit behind this conundrum is the energy shock, which has caused Italian yields to rise above 4%. However, unlike in 2022, when the spread between Italian and German yields was much wider, the current spread remains relatively tight. This is because German yields have increased significantly, more than doubling since 2022.
This situation poses a challenge for the ECB as it tries to balance its response to growth and inflation. Lagarde's statement highlights the risks to growth on one side and the upside risks to inflation on the other. The ECB must navigate this delicate balance without exacerbating either issue further.
