ECB Finds Banks Need Improvement in Geopolitical Risk Assessments
The European Central Bank (ECB) has urged banks to improve their assessments of geopolitical risks after conducting a thematic reverse stress test on the topic.
The exercise, which assessed how 110 euro area banks under direct ECB supervision would respond to severe geopolitical scenarios, found that banks were generally able to develop meaningful stress scenarios reflecting their specific vulnerabilities.
However, the ECB identified areas where improvements are needed, including the level of detail and sensitivity of risk assessments, consistency between scenario descriptions and their impact on solvency and liquidity, and the realism of proposed mitigating actions.
