ECB Governing Council Meets in Berlin Amid Rising Inflation and Economic Growth
The European Central Bank's Governing Council met in Berlin to review economic data and determine its next move on monetary policy. The meeting, hosted by the Deutsche Bundesbank, comes at an awkward moment with inflation rising again but the economy slowly gaining momentum.
Euro-area headline inflation reached 3.3% year-on-year in August 2026, up from 2.9% in July. This increase is concerning for the ECB, which has been trying to steer prices back towards its 2% target.
The economy itself showed some signs of growth, with GDP expanding 0.6% quarter-on-quarter in Q2 2026. However, rising energy prices and geopolitical tensions are contributing to consumer costs.
Some analysts predict a 25 basis point rate hike at this meeting, but the ECB has emphasized its data-dependent approach, refusing to commit to any predetermined interest rate path.
