ECB Hikes Interest Rate to 2.5% Amid Ongoing Inflation Concerns
The European Central Bank (ECB) has raised its key interest rate to 2.5% after voting on Thursday. This decision comes as a response to ongoing inflation concerns and geopolitical disruptions affecting the eurozone.
Eurozone consumer inflation reached 3.3% in August, mainly driven by a 14.3% surge in energy prices. The ECB's baseline forecast indicates that inflation excluding energy and food is expected to average 2.5% in 2026, 2.6% in 2027, and 2.3% in 2028.
ECB President Christine Lagarde emphasized the ongoing geopolitical instability will impact price levels across the eurozone, stating 'the outlook remains highly uncertain, with risks to the upside for inflation and to the downside for economic growth.'
