ECB Hikes Interest Rates Amid Euro Area Growth Surprise
The European Central Bank (ECB) has taken a surprising step by raising its growth forecast and hiking interest rates simultaneously. Chief Economist Philip R. Lane presented revised projections showing real GDP growth for 2026 expected to hit 0.9%, a 0.1 percentage point upgrade from the June forecast.
The euro area posted 0.4% GDP growth in the second quarter of 2026, beating initial expectations. Lane's projections extend this positive trajectory further out: 1.4% growth in 2027 and 1.5% in 2028.
However, the inflation picture is less rosy, with HICP inflation projected to average 3.0% for 2026, well above the central bank's 2% target. Lane acknowledged the high degree of uncertainty surrounding the Middle East conflict and its implications for energy prices.
