ECB Hikes Interest Rates Amid Ongoing Middle East Conflict
The European Central Bank (ECB) has raised interest rates to combat inflation fueled by high oil prices, caused by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The decision was made at a meeting held in Berlin on September 10, 2026.
The ECB's benchmark rate was increased by a quarter percentage point to 2.50%, following a stronger-than-expected economy that suggests businesses can weather higher borrowing costs.
Bank President Christine Lagarde stated that the conflict continues to generate inflation pressures, and inflation is set to remain above target for an extended period.
