The European Central Bank (ECB) raised its key interest rate by 25 basis points to 2.5% in an effort to combat the highest inflation rate in three years.

Inflation in the euro area reached 3.3% in August, surpassing the ECB's 2% target and prompting a unanimous decision among Governing Council members to increase rates.

ECB President Christine Lagarde described the hike as a 'no-brainer,' but refused to provide forward guidance on future rate changes, citing ongoing geopolitical uncertainty.
