ECB Hikes Rates Amid Energy Inflation Concerns
The European Central Bank (ECB) has raised its three key interest rates in response to persistent energy-driven inflation. The decision affects the deposit rate, main refinancing rate, and marginal lending rate.
The deposit rate will rise to 2.50% on September 16, while the main refinancing and marginal lending rates will increase to 2.65% and 2.90%, respectively.
The ECB's staff now project headline inflation of 3.0% in 2026, 2.5% in 2027, and 2.1% in 2028, with growth projections also improving for 2026 and 2027 to 0.9% and 1.4%, respectively.
The ECB warned of upside inflation risks and downside growth risks but did not commit to further rate moves, leaving the next decision dependent on incoming evidence rather than establishing an automatic series of increases.
