ECB Hikes Rates Amid Ongoing Oil Price Pressures
The European Central Bank (ECB) has raised its benchmark interest rate by a quarter percentage point to 2.50%, in an effort to combat rising inflation.
The decision was made at a meeting held in Berlin, rather than the usual venue in Frankfurt, and comes as oil prices continue to soar due to disruptions in shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz.
The conflict in Iran has led to elevated energy prices, which are contributing to eurozone inflation exceeding 3.3%, well above the ECB's target of 2%.
ECB President Christine Lagarde emphasized that 'the conflict in the Middle East continues to generate inflationary pressures' and that the bank will continue to monitor economic data before making future rate decisions.
