ECB Holds Interest Rates Amid Rising Energy Prices and Inflation Concerns
The European Central Bank (ECB) has decided to maintain its current interest rate levels, according to ING. This decision is justified by recent economic data showing declining headline inflation, no evidence of secondary effects from higher energy costs, and a resilient eurozone economy despite the ongoing oil price shock.
However, survey-based inflation expectations have risen, remaining a point of concern for the ECB. Looking ahead, the path for interest rate policy becomes less clear due to the recent surge in energy prices, which has moved the ECB closer to its more severe macroeconomic scenarios.
The central bank's internal macroeconomic projections for September are expected to signal the need for another rate hike unless oil prices decline substantially in the coming weeks. Despite this, the ECB could have chosen to raise rates at this meeting but instead opted not to break the established practice of avoiding market surprises.
