ECB Holds Rates Steady Amid Volatile Oil Prices
The European Central Bank (ECB) has decided to hold interest rates steady at 2.25% amid ongoing uncertainty about the impact of oil price fluctuations on inflation.
This decision comes after a quarter-point hike in June, which was aimed at mitigating the effects of higher oil prices due to the US-Iran conflict and subsequent disruption of oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.
Oil prices had fallen following the announcement of a ceasefire, but rose again when the agreement collapsed and fighting resumed. Brent crude rose 4% on Thursday after Iranian-backed Houthi rebels attacked two Saudi oil tankers near the Bab al-Mandeb Strait.
The ECB's decision to hold rates steady may be seen as a pause to gather more information about the inflationary impact of energy prices, which remain volatile. Economists are pointing towards the September 10 meeting as a possible time for another rate increase.
