ECB Independence Under Threat from Eurozone Debt Crisis
The European Central Bank's (ECB) independence is under threat due to high public debt levels in several eurozone countries, according to a warning from Commerzbank analysts. The analysts point to the growing pressure on the ECB to keep borrowing costs low as governments struggle with their own debt burdens.
With many eurozone members having debt-to-GDP ratios exceeding 140%, such as Italy and Greece, the bank suggests that these high levels could lead to increased political pressure on the ECB. This could potentially undermine its primary objective of price stability.
The ECB's independence is enshrined in the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, which prohibits the institution from seeking or taking instructions from EU bodies or national governments. However, past crises have tested these boundaries, and Commerzbank warns that the current situation may be just as challenging for the ECB.
