ECB Interest Rate Hike Sparks Calls for Emergency EU Debate
The European Central Bank (ECB) has increased interest rates by a quarter of a percentage point, from 2.25% to 2.5%, in an effort to combat inflation.
This move has sparked calls for an emergency debate in the European Parliament, with Portuguese MEP Joao Oliveira urging MEPs to address the issue and its impact on ordinary people.
Oliveira argued that the real root causes of inflation are not being addressed, leading to increased costs for workers and small businesses, as well as higher house prices and fuel costs.
The ECB's chief economist, Philip Lane, justified the decision by pointing out that eurozone inflation currently stands at 3.3%, surpassing the ECB's 2% target.
