ECB Keeps Rates Steady Amid Ongoing Inflation Concerns
The European Central Bank (ECB) kept its key interest rates unchanged in July, signaling a wait-and-see approach as inflation dynamics remain mixed. The decision was made after the ECB's account of its 22-23 July meeting revealed that policymakers see upside inflation risks persisting despite leaving rates unchanged.
According to the June data, headline inflation dropped to 2.8% from 3.2% in May, while core inflation fell to 2.4%. The energy market volatility and ongoing conflict in the Middle East continue to shape the ECB's policy debate.
The account of the July meeting shows that policymakers are cautious about further rate hikes, citing a wait-and-see approach as they reassess their stance in September. Chief Economist Philip Lane proposed keeping rates unchanged after the June rate hike, with September set as the next full reassessment point.
