ECB Keeps Rates Steady Amid Volatile Oil Prices
The European Central Bank has decided to hold interest rates steady at 2.25%, citing uncertainty about how volatile energy prices will affect inflation. This decision comes despite a quarter-point hike just last month, aimed at dampening the impact of higher oil prices on consumer prices.
Analysts say the bank may be taking a pause to gather more information amid swings in oil prices, which have seen significant fluctuations recently. Oil prices fell after the announcement of a ceasefire but rose again when the agreement collapsed and fighting resumed.
ECB President Christine Lagarde emphasized that 'uncertainty remains high and the full inflationary impact of the energy shock has yet to play out.' She noted that the bank is closely monitoring the intensity and duration of the shock, as well as its indirect effects on broader inflation.
Lagarde also addressed speculation about her future plans, stating that she would stay in office until at least 2027. This comes after a question about whether she would commit to serving out her full eight-year term.
