ECB Leadership in Flux: Several Countries Back Candidates for Top Posts
The European Central Bank (ECB) leadership is set for a major shake-up in 2027, as the terms of ECB President Christine Lagarde and two other influential officials expire. The succession race has already begun, with several countries positioning their preferred candidates.
The Netherlands has officially endorsed former De Nederlandsche Bank governor Klaas Knot for the ECB presidency, while Spain has backed Pablo Hernández de Cos, a current head of the Bank for International Settlements and former Governor of the Bank of Spain. Another leading contender is Joachim Nagel, President of Germany's Bundesbank.
Lagarde's potential early departure from the ECB, possibly to pursue a role in France's April 2027 elections or at the World Economic Forum, has fueled speculation that she may leave her post before completing her term in October 2027. If this happens, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz are expected to play key roles in negotiating her successor.
Given Lagarde's nationality, it is unlikely that another French national would immediately assume the presidency. This scenario could encourage Macron to support a candidate from another eurozone country while seeking other influential positions for France within the ECB.
