ECB Nears Launch of Digital Euro, Targeting 2029 Rollout
The European Central Bank (ECB) is making significant progress in its development of a retail central bank digital currency (CBDC), known as the digital euro. The ECB aims to strengthen Europe's payment infrastructure and reduce reliance on foreign payment providers and privately issued digital assets.
According to recent reports, the ECB is on track to become the first major Western central bank to issue a CBDC, with the launch of the digital euro targeted for 2029. This milestone marks a significant shift in the financial landscape, as policymakers seek to enhance Europe's payment infrastructure and promote economic stability.
The legislative framework for the digital euro is currently under negotiation between the European Parliament, the European Commission, and the Council of the European Union. Subject to its adoption by the end of 2026, the ECB will formally approve the project on January 1, 2027, marking a major achievement in the development of the digital euro.
The pilot phase for the digital euro is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2027 and will involve 36 banks and payment service providers from 19 countries, including Greece's Piraeus Bank, National Bank of Greece, and fintech company Revolut. The trial will assess the feasibility and effectiveness of the digital euro in various financial scenarios.
