ECB Pauses Rate Hike Cycle Amid Ongoing Inflation Concerns
The European Central Bank (ECB) has decided to hold its key interest rates steady at their current levels, marking a pause in its tightening cycle. This decision was made after the June hike, where the ECB pushed rates higher.
The deposit facility rate will remain at 2.25%, while the main refinancing operations rate and marginal lending facility rate will stay at 2.40% and 2.65%, respectively.
The decision to hold rates steady was influenced by the current inflation trajectory, which is heading in the right direction but not fast enough to meet the ECB's target of 2%. Headline inflation fell to 2.8% in June 2026, down from 3.2% in May.
The ECB has emphasized that it will not pre-commit to any rate path and will make decisions based on incoming data. The next scheduled meeting is September 10, 2026, which many market participants are closely watching for a potential rate increase.
