ECB Ponders Rate Hike to Combat Soaring Inflation
The European Central Bank (ECB) is likely to raise interest rates after its July policy meeting, according to the bank's account of the meeting. ECB policymakers discussed a potential rate increase to bring inflation back down to 2%, which was cited as a major driver keeping inflation elevated into 2027 due to energy price volatility stemming from the Middle East conflict.
The ECB emphasized that decisions on interest rates are data-dependent and will be made on a meeting-by-meeting basis. However, several policymakers, including Slovak central bank chief Peter Kazimir, publicly indicated that another hike was likely unless the inflation outlook improved significantly.
While there is no pre-commitment to a specific path for future rate hikes, the ECB has signaled readiness to act if inflation doesn't improve. This suggests that another interest rate increase could be implemented as early as September, depending on incoming economic data.
