ECB Prepares for Another Rate Hike Amid Persistent Inflation Concerns
The European Central Bank (ECB) is poised to raise interest rates again as it battles high inflation. In fact, several Wall Street banks, including Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, and Barclays, expect another rate hike in December, with some predicting further increases in the future. The ECB has already raised rates by 25 basis points, but inflation remains above its 2% target, which is expected to continue until late 2027.
The escalating tensions between the United States and Iran have driven crude oil prices above $100 per barrel, putting more pressure on inflation in the euro zone. This has reinforced expectations of a prolonged restrictive monetary policy stance from the ECB. Goldman Sachs, Citi, and Barclays all anticipate another rate hike in December, with Citi also predicting an additional increase in March 2027.
Citi economists warn that prolonged high inflation increases the risk of it becoming entrenched. UBS also expects a December rate hike by the ECB, which could lead to a 2.5% interest rate by late 2027. When asked about the recent rate increase, President Christine Lagarde described it as a 'no-brainer', highlighting the ECB's focus on managing inflation.
