ECB Puts Accessibility at Heart of Digital Euro Plans

The European Central Bank (ECB) has outlined its plans for making the digital euro accessible to people of all abilities and levels of digital confidence. The ECB aims to exceed the requirements of the European Accessibility Act by incorporating a wide range of accessibility features into the digital euro app.

These features include screen reader compatibility, keyboard navigation, simplified language, enhanced visual settings, and tools designed to reduce user errors. The ECB has developed the proposed design in collaboration with consumer organisations, accessibility specialists, and national central banks.

The usability and accessibility testing for the digital euro app will take place during the 2027 pilot, involving participation from organisations representing people with disabilities and Eurosystem staff. The ECB believes that integrating inclusive design into the development of the digital euro is essential for maintaining financial inclusion and public trust.
