ECB Raises Rates Amid AI Financing Needs and Surprising Economic Resilience
The European Central Bank (ECB) has raised its key interest rate by 25 basis points, according to ECB President Christine Lagarde. In a recent speech, she attributed this decision to the significant financing needs of artificial intelligence, which is driving demand for low-interest loans.
Lagarde also stated that the ECB is closely monitoring the bond market, particularly the long end, and noted that yield rises are not specific to the eurozone. She expressed surprise at the resilience of the economy, citing post-cutoff data suggesting even higher growth in 2026 than previously projected.
The inflation rate has been lower than anticipated, especially for food prices, but Lagarde emphasized that this is a temporary trend and that inflation remains a longer-term concern. She declined to comment on any potential foreign exchange intervention.
