ECB Rate Hike in September a Done Deal, December Uncertainty Looms
The European Central Bank's (ECB) decision to raise interest rates in September is all but certain, according to ECB Governing Council member Yves Mersch. The euro/dollar pair traded in a narrow range on Wednesday, hovering around 1.1580, with markets awaiting the central bank's latest policy guidance.
The September rate hike is seen as necessary and expected, aimed at reinforcing the downward trajectory of inflation while avoiding overly tight policy that could impose unnecessary shocks on the economy.
However, Mersch noted that the December policy path remains uncertain, hinging on geopolitical developments and inflation trends. Markets currently price in roughly 47 basis points of tightening by year-end, already factoring in the September hike.
