ECB Rate Hike Uncertainty Amid Global Inflation Pressures
In California, record-breaking temperatures of 36 degrees Celsius have prompted local utility Pacific Gas and Electric Company to issue power-saving guidance for small businesses. The residential electricity prices in California are a staggering 89% above the national average, with an increase of nearly 9% compared to the same period last year.
With fuel prices continuing to set new highs across the state, households are facing significant pressure on their expenses. Utility bills like electricity and water, combined with fuel expenses such as gasoline, account for roughly 10% of total household spending in the US.
The European Central Bank (ECB) is expected to raise interest rates by 25 basis points at its upcoming meeting, with a nearly 99% probability priced into markets. However, experts question whether this will effectively cool inflation, given that recent surges are largely driven by supply-side energy factors.
Jeremy Siegeland, Emeritus Professor of Finance at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, noted that 'if the midterm elections were not on the horizon, the Fed would raise rates.' With the Federal Reserve's meeting just ahead, pressure is mounting for Chair Kevin Warsh to make a decision.
