ECB Rate Hikes Tied to Energy Price Fluctuations

The European Central Bank (ECB) raised its three key interest rates by 0.25% to 2.50%, 2.65%, and 2.90%, effective from September 16, 2026.

Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel stated that any further rate hikes will depend on how energy prices evolve over the next month.

Nagel said rates are currently at the upper end of neutral territory but could enter 'mild restrictive territory' if energy prices continue to rise.

The ECB's decision comes as Brent crude and US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) oil prices remain above $100 per barrel, while Dutch TTF gas futures hit their highest level since 2022.
