ECB Reassures on Digital Euro's Privacy Features
The European Central Bank (ECB) has addressed concerns over the digital euro's potential impact on user privacy. A senior ECB official stated that the proposed digital currency will offer stronger privacy protections, with transaction details being known only to the payer and payee for offline payments.
This reassurance is significant as privacy has become a sensitive aspect of the digital euro project. Some critics fear that a central bank-backed digital currency could give public authorities unprecedented visibility over everyday transactions.
The ECB's proposed design separates online and offline payments, with greater regulatory oversight for online transactions but no direct linking of individuals to their payments by the Eurosystem. Banks and payment providers would still have access to necessary information to comply with anti-money-laundering rules.
