The European Central Bank is redesigning the euro banknotes to improve their security and make them more environmentally friendly. The current series of notes features fictional images, but the new designs will be based on real people, places, and themes that reflect European culture.

According to Alexander Demarco, Governor of the Central Bank of Malta, the redesign is not just about aesthetics. 'The redesign goes beyond aesthetics,' he said. 'Banknotes need to be redesigned periodically so that we can make use of new technologies to improve their security and make them more difficult to counterfeit.'

The new designs feature five themes: European culture, rivers, and birds. The banknotes will include images of famous European figures, representations of places where European culture is practiced, and buildings of European institutions.
