ECB Reveals Shortlisted Euro Banknote Designs with Focus on European Culture and Rivers

The European Central Bank (ECB) has unveiled ten shortlisted design proposals for the next series of euro banknotes. The designs focus on two themes: 'European culture' and 'Rivers and birds.' A total of 1,200 applications were received from graphic designers across the EU in response to a design contest.

The ECB's independent jury selected the shortlisted proposals after reviewing submissions from twenty-five designers. The Governing Council is expected to choose the winning design by the end of 2026, based on the jury's conclusions, technical assessment, and findings from two surveys.

The new euro banknotes will feature improved security features and increased accessibility for visually impaired people. Additionally, the ECB aims to reduce the environmental footprint of the banknotes through sustainable materials and production processes.
