The European Central Bank (ECB) has unveiled 10 design proposals for a new series of euro banknotes, which are used by over 358 million people across 21 EU countries. The designs were narrowed down to two themes: European Culture and Rivers and Birds.

European Culture features famous Europeans such as Ludwig van Beethoven, Marie Curie, and Leonardo da Vinci on the front side, while the reverse sides show depictions of street artists or a choral festival among other things.

The ECB is now seeking input from citizens through an online survey, which will remain open until September 21. The governing council plans to select a proposal by late 2026, with the new banknotes likely to be introduced sometime after that.

ECB President Christine Lagarde emphasized the importance of hearing the voice of the people, as the banknotes belong to them. Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel also encouraged citizens to participate and share their opinions to help shape the future of the euro.
