ECB Seeks Public Opinion on New Euro Banknote Designs

The European Central Bank (ECB) has launched a public consultation to gather opinions on proposed designs for new euro banknotes. The current design is set to be replaced, and Europeans have until September 21 to vote on their favorite among the ten finalist mock-ups.

Over 1,200 designers participated in an initial competition, with a panel of experts selecting the final ten entries. The designs can be broadly categorized into two main themes: European cultural heritage and natural wealth.

The first theme features portraits of prominent figures such as Maria Callas, Ludwig van Beethoven, Marie Curie, Miguel de Cervantes, Leonardo da Vinci, and Bertha von Suttner on the obverse. The reverse would showcase images of leisure and coexistence activities that highlight values of inclusion and dialogue among European nations.

The second theme focuses on illustrating birds and European rivers on the obverse, while reserving the reverse for architecture related to major European community bodies.

EU citizens can participate in the survey on the ECB's website. The Governing Council plans to combine public opinion with technical reports and expert assessment to make a final decision by the end of 2023.
