ECB Sees No Immediate Stagflation Threat from Hormuz Disruptions
European Central Bank policymaker Piero Cipollone has downplayed the risk of stagflation due to the ongoing crisis in the Strait of Hormuz. He stated that there are currently no signs pointing to a scenario of stagflation, despite the disruptions caused by the crisis.
Cipollone's comments were made in an interview with Italy's ilsussidiario.net, which was published on August 24th. The policymaker emphasized the need to monitor changes in the macroeconomic environment but sees no immediate threat from Hormuz disruptions.
According to ECB sensitivity analysis, a sustained disruption could reduce euro-area GDP by approximately 0.4 percentage points and lift inflation by around 1.3 percentage points. However, this remains a downside scenario and not the base case.
