ECB Set to Hike Interest Rates Amid Iran Conflict Pressures
The European Central Bank (ECB) is planning to increase interest rates at its September meeting in response to economic pressures from the ongoing Iran conflict. According to a report by Reuters, ECB policymakers believe that another rate hike is necessary to prevent war-related energy price increases from spreading throughout the economy.
The ECB previously lifted borrowing costs in June for the first time in nearly three years to address inflation concerns. With inflation near 3%, policymakers view the move as necessary to prevent a repeat of the sharp inflation surge that occurred after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.
The expected increase would raise the policy rate to 2.50% from 2.25%. The ECB's economic projections from June already factored in this expected increase, and policymakers believe it is necessary to maintain control over inflation drivers such as rising prices and elevated petrol costs at fuel stations.
