ECB Set to Hike Rates as Eurozone Inflation Hits 3.3%
Financial markets expect the European Central Bank (ECB) to raise interest rates on Thursday in response to inflation concerns. The ECB's key rate is currently at 2%, and a quarter-point increase would take it to 2.5%. This move comes as eurozone inflation accelerated to 3.3% in August, driven by energy prices which surged to 14.3%.
The decision itself is largely priced in, but investors are divided on whether this will mark another step in a longer tightening cycle or the start of an extended pause. A Deutsche Bank client survey shows that more than a third of respondents expect the key rate to reach 2.75%, while about a quarter anticipate only one additional increase.
The ECB faces a delicate balance between addressing persistent inflation risks and avoiding over-tightening into an uncertain economic environment. Its comments on sovereign bond yields will also be closely watched, as higher borrowing costs are increasingly affecting governments across the currency bloc.
