ECB Set to Hike Rates as Inflation Concerns Mount
The European Central Bank is set to raise interest rates on Thursday, amidst concerns about inflation and economic growth. The rate hike is widely expected, with traders anticipating a quarter-point move to 2.5%. This would be a cautious decision, given the ongoing US-Iran conflict and high oil prices.
Carsten Brzeski, ING's global head of macro, described the potential rate hike as 'a dovish rate hike' or an 'insurance rate hike'. The move is seen as a response to higher energy costs, which have driven euro zone inflation back above 3% in August.
Economists expect the ECB's projections for inflation and growth to remain broadly unchanged, although some anticipate GDP estimates could be revised higher. The labour market is soft, with wage growth slowing down.
