The European Central Bank (ECB) has signaled a green light for UniCredit's pursuit of Commerzbank, with a confidential document cited by Süddeutsche Zeitung suggesting that regulatory approval is leaning towards the Italian lender's takeover bid.

The development comes as Commerzbank posts its strongest-ever first-half profit, with the bank reporting a net profit attributable to shareholders of €898 million in the second quarter - nearly doubling from €462 million in the same period last year.

The ECB has cautioned that integrating the two cross-border institutions could prove 'lengthy and complex', but regulatory approval alone will not guarantee a frictionless merger. Germany's BaFin remains publicly critical of UniCredit's approach, accusing the Italian bank of aggressive tactics.

The share price initially ticked higher on the earnings release before reversing course to close marginally lower. Analyst reactions have been mixed, with Deutsche Bank and DZ Bank reaffirming 'Buy' ratings while JPMorgan downgraded the stock to 'Neutral' but lifted its price target to €38.
