ECB Sounds Alarm on AI-Fueled Dot-Com Bubble Risk
The European Central Bank (ECB) has issued a warning about the potential risks of a new 'dot-com bubble' in the wake of an AI boom. According to five economists from the ECB, the current market valuations are unsustainable and could lead to a correction.
The researchers point to historical precedents such as the railway boom of the 19th century, the spread of electricity and radio in the 1920s, and the internet boom of the 1990s, where truly transformative technologies attracted investment, leading to sharp increases in valuations followed by crashes.
The economists estimate that eurozone households have around €440 billion in exposure to US technology stocks through mutual funds and ETFs. This means that a significant portion of the region's population may not be aware of the concentration risk they are taking on.
The authors caution that the timing of a potential correction is impossible to predict, but they suggest that it could happen soon. They also acknowledge that if AI proves to be transformative enough, future valuations could be much higher even after a correction.
