ECB Sounds Alarm on Climate Change's Threat to Global Economy
The European Central Bank (ECB) is sounding the alarm on climate change's threat to global economy. As stock markets continue to soar, driven by an 'infantile belief' in artificial intelligence leading to abundance, ECB officials are warning of ecosystem degradation and its potential impact on financial stability.
Frank Elderson, a member of the ECB's executive board, emphasized that the banking industry is aware of the need to address climate-related risks. He stated that it would be 'very difficult' to find a bank in Europe that doesn't consider these risks relevant.
The ECB has initiated a program to assess how ecosystem degradation could expose the financial system to risk. The investigation will examine the translation of ecosystem degradation pathways into credit loss dynamics for eurozone banks, with findings expected later this year.
