ECB Stays Course Amid Oil Price Volatility
The European Central Bank (ECB) has decided to hold interest rates steady at 2.25% amid uncertainty over the impact of volatile oil prices on inflation.
This decision comes after a quarter-point hike in June, which was aimed at mitigating the effects of higher oil prices due to the US-Iran conflict and subsequent disruption of oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.
Analysts suggest that the bank may be taking a pause to gather more information on the situation, with economists pointing towards the ECB's September 10 meeting as a potential time for another rate increase.
ECB President Christine Lagarde emphasized the uncertainty surrounding energy prices and their potential impact on inflation, stating, 'Uncertainty remains high and the full inflationary impact of the energy shock has yet to play out... We are therefore closely monitoring the intensity and duration of the shock, as well as its indirect and second-round effects.'
