ECB Survey: Inflation Expectations Unchanged as Prices Expected to Decline Quickly
The European Central Bank's (ECB) latest survey indicates that inflation expectations in the euro zone have remained largely unchanged over the past three months. The report shows that price growth is expected to decline quickly next year, before returning to the ECB's target of 2% in 2028.
Inflation has been a major concern for the ECB, with prices averaging around 3% due to surging energy costs. However, most economists believe that inflation is nearing its peak and will begin to fall back towards the target sometime in 2027.
The survey projects that inflation will average 2.7% this year, unchanged from previous projections. For 2027, inflation is expected to rise to 2.2%, up from 2.1%. In 2028, inflation is projected to reach the ECB's target of 2% and remain there.
The ECB kept interest rates steady on Thursday, citing the lack of second-round effects from energy price surges. However, the bank hinted at further tightening in the future, possibly as soon as September.
